Important Changes to Business Waste Management for 2025

Important changes to waste management in 2025 find out more from Baileys Skip Hire and recycling

As your trusted waste management partner, Bailey’s Skip Hire and Recycling wants to ensure you’re well-prepared for the significant changes coming to business waste regulations in England. Here’s what you need to know about the new legal requirements for workplace waste separation.

When Do These Changes Take Effect?

  • For most businesses: March 31, 2025
  • For micro-firms (fewer than 10 full-time employees): March 31, 2027

What’s Changing?
All workplaces in England will have a legal duty to separate their waste into three main categories:

  1. Dry Recyclable Materials:
    • Paper and card (to be separated from other recyclables unless your collector permits combining)
    • Glass (such as drinks bottles and food jars)
    • Metal (including cans, empty aerosols, and aluminium items)
    • Plastic (such as cleaned food containers and bottles)
  2. Food Waste:
    • All food leftovers
    • Food preparation waste (regardless of volume, even if you don’t have a canteen)
  3. Black Bin Waste (Residual):
    • Non-recyclable items like nappies
    • Heavily contaminated materials that can’t be cleaned

Who Needs to Comply?
These rules apply to any business or workplace that generates household-type waste, including:

  • Offices and retail establishments
  • Hospitality venues
  • Educational institutions
  • Healthcare facilities
  • Care homes
  • Charities and places of worship
  • Transport and storage facilities

Important Notes

  • If your premises generate garden waste, you must arrange for it to be recycled or composted where environmentally appropriate
  • You can choose container sizes and collection frequency based on your needs
  • All waste collectors must be registered on the Public Register of Waste Carriers, Brokers and Dealers

Non-Compliance
The Environment Agency will have the authority to issue compliance notices to businesses that don’t meet these requirements by the deadline.
