What Happens To Your Waste?

what happens to your waste

Baileys Skip Hire and Recycling ensures that once we receive your waste, it is disposed of sustainably and efficiently.

The mixed waste in your skip is sent for segregation when it arrives at our centre. Here is how we segregate your waste.

A mechanical pre-pick removes larger waste items for recycling. These waste items include wood, large pieces of plastic, cardboard, and carpet. The remaining waste is sent through to the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) for manual picking. This process is essential to remove items from the residual waste stream to avoid recyclable materials being disposed of incorrectly. The MRF separates recyclables into separate material streams, and prepares them for selling in commodity markets. These recyclable items include paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, and aluminium and steel cans.

Turning Waste Into Energy

The residual waste left after these recycling processes is turned from waste into energy. This energy is Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), and is sent to energy plants in Europe. This means that Baileys Skips can provide an environmentally sound solution for waste of all types ensuring absolute minimal landfill.

What Happens To Each Waste Type

Plastics are segregated and put through a baler. The baler presses the plastic waste into tightly compacted bundles. These plastic bales are then sent to plastic recycling companies who will use the plastics to make new products.

Cardboard is also baled. Like the plastic, the baler compacts the cardboard into tightly compacted bundles. These tightly compacted bundles are then sent to paper mills, where they are de-inked. They are then pulled and boiled as a pulp to break down the fibres. This pulp is then formed into paper and wound into large reels. This paper is turned into new cardboard and other paper products.

The wood is also recycled. It is placed in a powerful wood shredder to break the wood chunks into a variety of pieces. This shredded wood is used in a variety of uses, including animal bedding and as a BioMass fuel.

Hardcore products, such as stones and earth, are segregated through a mechanical process and resold as aggregates.

Metal is processed, broken down and separated into different materials, such as aluminium, iron, brass, and tin. These separate materials are then sent off to be made into new products.
